Thank you for visiting Gaya's Guesthouse Website!
I'm Gaya- the founder of Gaya's guesthouse. I have been running a small ger-guesthouse in Kharkhorin, Central Mongolia since 2003. With the help of my mother Chantsa and daughters Ganju and Nomio, we operate throughout the year, trying to offer a home from home for travelers passing through Kharkhorin. Please note that we offer a simple, no-frills accommodation experience. As a small establishment, we may not provide luxury amenities or high-end services, but rest assured, we’re dedicated to offering you the best we can. Your comfort and satisfaction are our top priorities.
While we organize excursions throughout the country, our specialty lies in Central Mongolian tours, particularly around our hometown of Kharkhorin. Let us show you the wonders of our region with unforgettable experiences and local insights. Our tours generally start from Ulaanbaatar or Kharkhorin, but we are flexible and will adapt to our guests' needs.
Kharkhorin has been the center of history and nature in Central Mongolia for centuries. Due to this fact, this whole area has been appointed as a UNESCO World Heritage "Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape" since 2004. You have plenty of choices for where to go and what to do here - we hope to help you enjoy discovering it!
We are looking forward to welcoming you to our home town Kharkhorin!

The Eight Lakes
Eigth lakes horse trip
This a wonderful way to see the beautiful Mongolian landscapes, experience the nomadic culture and stay with locals, all while traveling the Mongolian way-by horse!
What to expect;
This is a real Mongolian experience. This is not a sanitized or “catered to” trip. You will stay with Mongolian families, sometimes in a spare Ger or sometimes in the Ger with the family living there. Eating nomadic foods and drinking milk tea will be a big part of this trip. Riding the horse can vary between 3-6 hours every day, and trips typically last between 3 and 8 days. At least 3 days are needed to reach the lakes and return home. The horses are well-trained and well cared for. Even a beginner rider can make this trip. The saddles are padded and are a westernized style to ensure safety and comfort.
The ride will take you through the wide open grassland, river fed valleys, over mountain passes and around some of the lakes in the "Naiman Nuur" National Park.
You may also enjoy playing with local kids, milking a yak, helping herd up the goats or simply enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
What to bring:
- Warm sleeping bag/blanket
- Boots to ride a horse with
- Clothes that will get very dirty
- Long pants (saddle sores)
- Water bottle
- Warm sweater/jacket
- Rain coat
- Bar of soap
- Toilet paper
- Sunscreen
- Fork/spoon/bowl
- Flashlight/head lamp
- Camera

FESTIVALS IN MONGOLIA
Tsagaan Sar- Mongolian Lunar New Year
Every year Mongolian people celebrate “Tsagaan Sar,” or the “White Moon” Lunar New Year, around when winter turns into spring. The exact dates of the holiday depend on the lunar calendar. Usually, it is held during the new moon at the end of January or in February. Tsagaan Sar celebrates the end of winter and welcomes the promise of a bountiful new year. It symbolizes a healthy, wealthy life. People start their preparations for Tsagaan Sar one month before the festivities begin. Families make hundreds, and even thousands, of buuz (steamed dumplings) and bansh (small boiled dumplings). Traditionally, family and friends visit each other’s homes and exchange presents and well-wishes during Tsagaan Tsar, which lasts for 3 days, so each family makes sure to prepare enough dumplings, meat, salads, sweets, and drinks to receive all of their guests. While the food is being prepared, the home is cleaned. The gers, barns and animal yards must be as clean as possible. The women make new deels (traditional Mongolian clothes) for every member of the family.
Though the weather is quite cold, Tsagaan Tsar is the warmest example of the famous Mongolian hospitality. No expense is spared, as this is the holiday nearest and dearest to the hearts of Mongolians. Any visitors who brave the cold and snow will be well rewarded with a holiday experience unlike any other.
Khovsgol Ice Festival- Early 2-4th of March
Every year, the Blue Pearl of Mongolia, Lake Khovsgol, completely freezes over. The annual 2-day Ice Festival is celebrated during the first weekend in March on the frozen lake outside the small town of Khatgal, at the southern border of the Siberian forest. Started to promote both national and international tourism during the off-season, the festival’s main events include ice sculpting, ice sumo, ice ankle bone shooting and horse sled races. This festival is a fun and unique way to see one of Mongolia’s most beloved national treasures.
Eagle Festival Bayan Ulgii - September and October
The Golden Eagle festival is a traditional annual festival held in the province of Bayan Ölgii during the first weekend of October. The Mongolian Association of falconers organizes it, and it is a celebration of the unique eagle hunting styles of western Kazakh Mongolians. It marks the beginning of the hunting season. At the festival, visitors can see the remarkable skills of the eagles and their hunting partners, as well as experience traditional Kazakh-Mongolian food, games, and culture.
Another similar, smaller festival takes place each year in the neighboring village of Sagsai during the third weekend of September.
Ulaanbaatar Eagle Festival –March 3-4
This one-day event is arranged by the Chingisiin Khuree Tourist Ger Camp, together with the governor’s office of Bayan Ulgii Province. Eagle hunters from the Altai Mountains, the region famous for perfecting eagle hunting, travel to Ulaanbaatar to take part in the festival, which is the smaller version of the Bayan Ulgii Golden Eagle Festival held in Western Mongolia in October. Also exhibited are traditional Kazakh games and horse competitions.
Thousand Camel Festival – Southern Gobi-March 6-7
The Thousand Camel Festival, held annually in the Gobi Desert, is a celebration of the endangered Bactrian camel and the role it plays in the lives of the Gobi’s nomads. This festival boasts events such as camel races, polo, Mongolian traditional music and dance performances, and Kazakh eagle hunting and horse-riding demonstrations.
Nauryz - Bayan Ulgii
Nauryz is the New Year celebration of the ethnic Kazakh Mongolians, most of whom live in Bayan Ulgii province in the far west of Mongolia. The month of March is called ‘Nauryz’ in Kazakh, and it is the time of spring and the ushering in of renewed life. The non-religious Nauryz celebrations occur during the spring equinox, on March 21st and 22nd. People believe that the more generous the festivities are, the happier the coming year will be. This is the time to settle all personal differences and debts, and people fill all the containers in their home with milk, yogurt (airan), grains, food, and fresh water to ensure good fortune, rain, and a bountiful harvest. This is the Kazakh version of Tsagaan Tsar, the Lunar New Year.
Saikhan Yak Festival – Soutern Gobi – May 21-22
The Southern Gobi Yak Festival is an annual event held in the beautiful mountainous Gobi region called Yoliin Am, or “Vulture’s Gorge,” in Umnugovi Province. The festival is a celebration of traditional practices of Yak breeding, and nowadays is a way to increase the Yak population of the Gobi, support local Yak herders, and increase public awareness of this lesser-known animal. Yak herders from 6 different regions in the Gobi gather to participate in games, Yak races, and beauty competitions (for the Yaks, usually). In addition, yak goods like wool, milk, dairy products, and clothes are sold.
National Naadam In Ulaanbaatar – July 11th and 12th
The biggest version of the Mongolian Summer Festival, called Naadam, is held in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, in the National Sports Stadium from July 11 – 13. Naadam, particularly in Ulaanbaatar, begins with an elaborate introduction ceremony featuring dancers, athletes, horse riders, and musicians. This opening ceremony is extremely popular with locals and international travelers. After the ceremony, the competitions begin. There are three main games played during Naadam: Traditional Mongolian wrestling, horse-back riding, and archery. In addition, the Mongolian game Shagai, played with sheep ankles, is featured.
Naadam Festival- Countryside
Mongolia has 21 provinces and 360 soums (small administrative divisions), and each hosts its own Naadam celebration. Every province decides their own festival date and, in general, so does each soum. Typically, the smaller the event, the more likely it is that the date won’t be set until a few weeks before. Soum Naadams are very different from the huge blowout in Ulaanbaatar. They are typically attended by local community members, and most of the competitors come from the surrounding towns. They tend to be more relaxed, and have a more home-town-festival feel.
Naadam festival – Kharkhorin in July
Kharkhorin will celebrate the Naadam festival from July 8, 9
Stay at Gaya’s guesthouse in Kharkhorin to experience this wonderful holiday. You can watch horse racing with 5 different ages of horses, wrestling of young people and adults, and try lots of delicious traditional foods. People flock to towns and villages during Naadam, all wearing their traditional clothes. It is great to see. There will be traditional singing, dancing, and poetry to top off all the excitement of Naadam.
Felting and Yak festival- Orkhon Valley July 22-23
The Yak Festival is one of the most important festivals in Mongolia. It’s held each year on the 23rd of July in the Orkhon Valley (Ulaan tsutgalan) in Bat Ulzii Soum, in Ovorhangai Province (central Mongolia), near the famous Orkhon Waterfall. Yaks have great value for nomadic herders. There will be yak racing, yak polo and a yak beauty pageant (although what makes one yak more or less beautiful than another is not always clear). Local people sell milk, felt, and wool products.

Places to Visit around Kharkhorin
There are many places worth visiting both inside and outside Kharkhorin. Since this area is appointed as a UNESCO World Heritage "Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape", both history and nature are very rich here! We will be very happy to organize day-trips and overnight tours for you. Please feel free to consult us for any inquiry. Please check our blog posts for the details of each spots, as well as the possible itineraries.
Erdene Zuu Monastery &
Ruin of Munkh Khaan's Great Temple
Established in 1586, Erdene Zuu is the oldest and the largest existing monastery in Mongolia. Its oldest part, Gurvan Zuu, survived the Soviet-influenced vandalism that overwhelmed Mongolia during the late 1930s. You will witness that history yourself as you enter the monastery, as there is nothing left in the east half of it. It is said that there were over 60 temples and related buildings in the territory of the monastery as of the end of the 19th century, of which 15 still remains today.
Kharkhorum Museum
Kharkhorin's new museum is small, but highly impressive – probably the country's best museum outside Ulaanbaatar. Everything is beautifully designed and well displayed. The building is fully air-conditioned, there are English-speaking guides available, English captions throughout and there's even free wi-fi in the small cafe (although the cafe itself is disappointing). The camera/video fee is T10,000/15,000 extra.
The exhibits include dozens of artefacts dating from the 13th and 14th centuries which were recovered from the immediate area, plus others that were found from archaeological sites in other parts of the aimag, including prehistoric stone tools. You'll see pottery, bronzes, coins, religious statues and stone inscriptions. There's also a half-excavated kiln sunk into the museum floor. Perhaps most interesting is the scale model of ancient Karakorum, which aims to represent the city as it may have looked in the 1250s, and is based on descriptions written by the missionary William of Rubruck.
King's Monument &
Orkhon River
About 3km from Gaya's Guesthouse
This large new monument, built in 2004, is on a hill overlooking Kharkhorin to the southwest. The three sides honour various empires established on the Orkhon Gol, including the Hunnu period (300–200 BC), the Turkic period (AD 600–800) and the Mongol period (13th century). There are superb panoramic views from here.
Khushuu Tsaidam Memorial
about 45 km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line
takes approximately 40 mins by car
Ugii Lake
about 80km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line
takes approximately 2 hours by car, depending on weather and road conditions
Khar Balgas
about 45km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line
takes approximately 1.5 hours by car, depending on weather and road conditions
Khar Bukh
Tsenkher Hotspring
about 160 km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line

Tuvkhun Monastery

takes approximately 2 hours by car, depending on conditions of weather and road
Orkhon Waterfall
Orkhon Waterfall is the biggest waterfall in Mongolia. It is the uppermost stream of Orkhon River, which is the longest river in Mongolia flowing for 1124km (709 miles) towards Lake Baikal of Russia. Since this area is off limits to cars, nature is untouched here and beyond, meaning it is perfect for any outdoor activities such as fishing, horse-riding or trekking. In winter, the entire waterfall completely freezes and you can climb up its frozen water.
The Orkhon Waterfall is approximately 130 km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line and takes about 3-6 hours by car, depending on weather and road conditions.
Eight Lakes
This is a real hidden gem of Orkhon Valley. As the name Eight Lakes tells, eight various-sized lakes are spread in one zone and they are interconnected underground. The photograph above shows the Table Lake, which is located in the farthest of all. Since the cars cannot drive into this zone, usually the only transportation to reach these lakes is horse-riding. Therefore a good experience of horse riding is required. It usually takes four days to go around the tour from and come back to the Orkhon Waterfall, staying at either in a tent or a local nomad's house. However, you'd better be flexible as to the necessary days since it might take longer due to whether/physical conditions.
The distance to the Eight Lakes is about 180 km from Kharkhorin. It takes around 6 hours by car from Kharkhorin to the bottom of the mountains where the Eight Lakes located.
Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes
Elsen Tasarkhai is a part of 80km-long Mongol Els sand dunes. It is the only desert in the central part of Mongolia and you will see many two-humped bactrian camels there, on which you can try a ride. It is located between Kharkhorin and Ulaanbaatar, about 100km from the former.
The Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes is approximately 90km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line and takes about 1 hour by car, depending on weather and road conditions.
Shankh Monastery
about 22 km away from Kharkhorin in a straight line
takes approximately 40 mins by car, depending on weather and road conditions
Visiting/Staying with
a Nomad Family
Some of my best friends are nomads in the steppe near Kharkhorin. You are welcome to visit them and experience their nomadic life! You can also stay with them for how-long-ever you like. They have an extra ger that you can sleep, or if you prefer, you can also stay in the same ger with the nomads. You can try all that nomads do - horse-riding, cooking Mongolian food, taking care of the animals... - with them. Thousands stars are waiting for you!
The distance to a nomad family varies from a season to another. In summer, it is about 7km away from Gaya's Guesthous, in Autumn, about 15 km and in spring and winter, the distance is approximately 18km.
